Product Description
The Packard Gray Wolf is one of the most interesting cars of early racing history. In 1901 the Packard brothers hired engineer Charles Schmidt to design their first four-cylinder automobile. Schmidt agreed and was allowed to build a racecar to demonstrate the performance of the new Packard Model K. They only built one, the Gray Wolf, at a cost of $10,000. Over the next few years that car won races and was wrecked several times - being rebuilt and evolving slightly along the way.
On January 2nd 1904, Mr. Schmidt set a land speed record at Ormond Beach, FL, in the lightning-quick Packard Gray Wolf covering the five-mile course in 4:26.1 minutes. He ran the Gray Wolf again on the 3rd when the weather was favorable, and shattered the previous record racing the course in just 4:21.6 minutes or 68.83 mph.
The car had 24 horsepower, a two-speed transmission, and weighed 1,430 pounds.
